Air-Conditioning Appreciation Days are Here – Here’s How to Appreciate Yours

July 16, 2014

If you’ve lived in Northeast Florida for any amount of time, we don’t have to tell you that July and August are the hottest months of the year. Temperatures hover in the 90s and can even hit triple-digits. That’s why Air Conditioning Appreciation Days run from early July through mid-August each year.

This year, our AC love is officially celebrated from July 3 through August 15. It’s a national observation that’s close to our heart not only because of the swelteringly hot weather we endure during the peak of summer, but also because our area played a major role in the development of modern day air conditioning. Known as the “father of refrigeration and air conditioning,” Jacksonville physician, scientist, inventor and humanitarian John Gorrie was studying tropical disease during the 1930s when he came upon a potentially world-changing idea.

The professional consensus of the day was that bad air caused or exacerbated tropical illnesses, and that these illnesses could be treated in part by cooling the air around the patient. Going on that hypothesis, Dr. Gorrie installed ice-filled basins suspended from patient room ceilings in a Florida hospital. Because it’s heavier that warm air, the cool air flowed down from the raised basins, across patient beds and out floor-level openings in the walls, thus creating the predecessor to the modern day air conditioning system.

To show your appreciation for your hard-working AC system, Charlie’s Tropic Heating and Air Conditioning offers these tips. First, change your AC filter at least once a month and be sure to choose the filter that’s best for your family’s particular needs. For instance, if a member of your family suffers allergies, you’ll want an AC filter with a higher MERV rating. Second, schedule an annual AC maintenance inspection. Understand that 93 percent of AC repairs could have been prevented via regular maintenance. Finally, have your AC ducts cleaned regularly to keep your home clear of potentially harmful dust and mold.
