Why is my Air Conditioning not Blowing Cold Air?

There are many possibilities as to why your air conditioning isn’t blowing out cold air. The first thing you should check is your indoor coil. The air filter is attached to the coil. Hopefully you’re familiar with it, because they require occasional replacement. If your current filter is dirty, this is likely the issue. Buildup on the filter restricts airflow, preventing cold air from flowing through into your home.

Your outdoor unit may be the root of the issue if the filter isn’t the problem. An outdoor air conditioning unit can have dirt and yard debris blocking its vents. When this happens, the necessary amount of heat can’t be dispersed, leaving higher amounts of warm air trapped inside. Simply remove any large debris then spray down the exterior of the unit with a garden hose to wash away any dirt.

If you’ve checked both of those problem areas and the air still isn’t blowing cold, there are a few other things you can try. If you haven’t already, look at your thermostat and make sure it’s set to “Auto.” If you have it set to “On,” this will keep the fan blowing constantly, but not always cold air.

Low refrigerant is the next item on the checklist. An HVAC professional can check the refrigerant levels in your unit and look for any areas where it may be leaking. Refrigerant is what helps cool the air. Running low on it can result in warmer air blowing out.

It’s possible that air could be leaking from your air ducts. This allows the cold air to escape while introducing warmer air into the ducts at the same time. You would probably have no idea that your air ducts are leaking without a proper examination by an HVAC professional. Most air ducts aren’t easily accessible. Getting a good look at the entire system is best attempted by someone with a lot of experience, like a Charlie’s Tropic technician.

Finally, your air conditioning unit could just be too small to effectively cool your home or business. It’s best to consult with an HVAC team, like the one here at Charlie’s Tropic, to determine what size system is appropriate for your space. Also, if you’ve recently completed any renovations or room additions, there’s a good chance you will need to upgrade to a larger system. Adding extra square footage will make it harder to cool your entire space. This can cause the air throughout to feel warmer than usual.

There’s no reason why you should be living without cold air conditioning, especially during the summer months in the South. If your air conditioning isn’t blowing out cold, you’re likely facing one of these problems. The team here at Charlie’s Tropic can evaluate the situation and come to a quick conclusion to have your cold air back up and running once again.
