An air conditioner that fails makes you uncomfortable. A gas or propane furnace that fails the wrong way can do more than that, which is why a heating tune-up is not the same errand as a cooling tune-up. These are the checks that matter most:
- Heat exchanger inspection, because a cracked exchanger can let combustion gases reach the air your blower distributes
- Carbon monoxide testing, the measurement that confirms the system is burning and venting cleanly
- Burner and ignition service, since dust accumulated over an idle summer is the usual reason a furnace will not light
- Safety control testing, verifying the switches that are supposed to shut the system down actually will
- Venting and combustion air, confirming the flue path is clear and the appliance can breathe
