A heat pump shares most of its anatomy with a straight air conditioner, but the parts that let it run backwards are the parts that most often need attention, and they are the ones a cooling-only technician has the least reason to look at:
- The reversing valve, which switches the system between heating and cooling. When it sticks, you get one mode and not the other
- The defrost cycle, which clears frost off the outdoor coil on cold mornings. A failed defrost control leaves the unit iced and unable to move heat
- Auxiliary heat strips, the supplemental electric elements that assist the heat pump on the coldest days, which we inspect as part of maintenance
- Year-round runtime, which means contactors, capacitors, and the compressor accumulate hours faster than on cooling-only equipment
- Coastal exposure, since the outdoor unit sits in salt air through both seasons rather than resting through one
Steam Off the Outdoor Unit Is Usually Fine
On a cold morning you may see the outdoor unit steaming, stopping, and running again. That is the defrost cycle doing its job, and it is normal behavior rather than a fault. What is not normal is a unit that stays encased in ice, never clears, or blows cool air indoors while it is supposed to be heating.
