Packaged HVAC System Services - All-In-One Repair, Installation & Maintenance

A packaged system puts heating and cooling in one outdoor cabinet instead of splitting them between an indoor and an outdoor unit. Charlie's Tropic Heating & Air repairs, replaces, and maintains packaged equipment across Atlantic Beach and the Jacksonville Beaches.

What a Packaged System Is, and Who Has One

In a conventional split system the compressor and condenser sit outside while the air handler or furnace lives in a closet, attic, or garage. A packaged system puts all of it into a single cabinet outdoors, usually on a slab beside the house or on the roof, and connects to the home through supply and return ducts.

That design is common on homes built without an attic or an equipment closet, and it frees up interior space. The tradeoff is exposure: every component, not just the condenser, sits outside in the sun, the humidity, and the salt air off the Atlantic. Charlie's Tropic Heating & Air has serviced packaged equipment at the Beaches since 1998 as a Bryant Factory Authorized Dealer, and we work on all major brands.

Packaged Unit Acting Up?

Because everything lives in one cabinet, a packaged system needs a technician who understands how the heating and cooling sides interact. We diagnose the whole unit, not just the symptom.

Packaged System Maintenance

Coil cleaning, refrigerant charge, electrical and control checks, and cabinet inspection. On equipment that lives entirely outdoors, this visit does the most work.

Why Packaged Equipment Ages Differently at the Beaches

On a split system, half the equipment is sheltered indoors. On a packaged system nothing is. The blower, the heating section, the controls, and the coils all share one cabinet in the weather, which changes what maintenance has to cover:

  • Cabinet and panel integrity, because salt air works on the housing itself and a compromised panel lets weather reach the components inside
  • Coil condition, since the coils face constant coastal exposure with no indoor half to fall back on
  • Duct transitions, the connections where conditioned air enters the house, which are a common place to lose air if seals fail
  • Drainage and pad condition, because a unit that settles or sits in standing water has a shorter life
  • Storm debris, worth a visual check after weather rather than waiting for a performance complaint
Repair or Replace?

Deciding on an Older Packaged Unit

The same guideline applies here as anywhere else. A newer, well-maintained unit needing a straightforward part is usually worth repairing. An older unit facing a major component failure, or one that has needed several repairs in a short span, is often better replaced than patched again.

What is different is that a packaged cabinet gives you one decision instead of two, since the heating and cooling sides are replaced together. We will tell you plainly which side of that line yours is on.

Packaged System Questions from Beaches Homeowners

It is a system that combines heating and cooling into a single outdoor cabinet rather than splitting the equipment between indoor and outdoor units. The cabinet usually sits on a slab beside the home or on the roof and connects to the house through supply and return ducts. It is a common choice for homes without an attic or an indoor equipment closet.

Every component is outdoors instead of half of them being sheltered inside. That means the blower, controls, and heating section face the same sun, humidity, and salt air as the coils do, so cabinet condition, panel seals, and drainage matter more than they would on a split system.

Sometimes, but it depends on whether the home has anywhere to put an indoor air handler and how the existing ductwork is routed. Many homes with packaged equipment were built without that space, which is why the packaged design was chosen originally. We look at the house before recommending a change in system type.

A visual check is worth doing. Look for debris packed against the cabinet, standing water around the pad, and panels that have shifted or lost fasteners. You do not need to open anything up. If something looks wrong, or the system behaves differently afterward, call us rather than running it and hoping.

Yes. We are a Bryant Factory Authorized Dealer and Bryant is what we install, but our technicians repair and maintain packaged systems from all major manufacturers, in both packaged heat pump and gas/electric configurations.
